How Does It Work?
Aeration is the removal of soil cores with machinery. Aeration is most effective in compacted areas like sports fields and heavily trafficked walking or pet areas.
Aerators can be rented which pull behind a small lawn tractor, but these aren’t typically effective because they don’t penetrate deep enough into the soil. A lawn care company usually has specialized machinery which penetrates the ground 2-3 inches deep and at a rate of 20-40 holes per square foot.
Most aerating is done in the spring to minimize any negative impact on the soil. Grasses like Kentucky bluegrass should be aerated in the fall or spring, when it is actively growing.
